Associate Unity

The Associate Unity combines Mahogany for warm growl and Ash for midrange punch to produce the sonic foundation of this model. The final sonic outcome can be tailored by the choice of top wood. Chechen or Cocobolo tighten and thicken the bottom end, and Walnuts or Maples add some shimmer to the highs. An Oil and Wax finish will give a more open, organic sound and a gloss poly finish will tighten the sound of the body. Color can be added to the poly for a more dramatic look.

Body: three piece; Mahogany wings, Ash centre block with Wenge accent veneers, figured Chechen, Maple, or Walnut top.
Neck: three piece Eastern Hard Rock Maple
Fingerboard: Fretted: Grenadillo or Rosewood Fretless: Ebony, lined or unlined
Frets: 24
Pickups: custom passive soapbars in wood covers
Preamp: custom active preamp with master volume/pull up mid contour, pan, boost/cut treble, mid, and bass controls; wiring and grounding is done using ultra-high grade Tara Labs wire and WBT silver solder
Finish: handrubbed oil and wax. Optional polyester high gloss finish in transparent red, blue, purple, or tobacco sunburst.
Hardware: black finish Hipshot Ultralite tuning machines, Hipshot quick release bridge, black finish Dunlop dual function straplocks
Scale: 34" standard, 33" and 35" upon request
Versions: 4, 5, and 6-string, fretted or fretless

Brase I

Inspired by a construction element developed by Vinnie Fodera and Anthony Jackson, the Brase brings a section of the upper horn down to contact the neck between the 11th and 15th frets. This causes the neck to be 'braced' both structurally and sonically. Structurally, the neck remains virtually flat from the 12th fret up, allowing for much more stable control of the neck enabling low action. Sonically, the bass has an authoritative, solidity to its sound. There is a dramatic transference of vibration to the body from the contact with the neck. It gives the bass astonishing sustain and an aliveness usually associated with older, more seasoned instruments.
The Brase responds remarkably evenly throughout its entire register.
Careful sculpting of the attached section makes it virtually unnoticeable to the fretting hand. A 'glue-in' neck joint is employed, giving the heel a sculpted 'neck-through' feel, but allows for the harmonically rich sound of a full body. The Brase has the focus and articulation of a 'neck-through' instrument combined with the full harmonic richness of a 'bolt-on'. The best of both worlds!
Furthermore, the placement of the forward strap-lock button, depending on the scale length, is in the area of the 10th fret giving the bass superb balance!

Body: two piece select Ash with figured Chechen, Cocobolo, Maple, or Walnut top
Neck: three piece Hard Rock Maple with dual action truss rod
Fingerboard: Fretted: Grenadillo or Rosewood Fretless: Ebony, lined or unlined
Frets: 24
Pickups: KL custom Aero or Basslines passive soapbars in wood covers
Preamp: custom active preamp with master volume/pull up mid contour, pan, boost/cut treble, mid, and bass controls; wiring and grounding is done using ultra-high grade Tara Labs wire and WBT silver solder
Finish: handrubbed oil and wax on neck and body. Optional polyester high gloss finish in transparent red, blue, purple, or tobacco sunburst
Hardware: black finish Hipshot Ultralite tuning machines, Hipshot quick release bridge, black finish Dunlop dual function straplocks
Scale: 34" standard, 33" and 35" upon request
Versions: 5, and 6-string, fretted or fretless

Brase II

The Brase II, the 'closed' Brase, was originally built to accommodate an inlay on a Brase I body, but hearing the sonic difference, the result of a certain amount more mass connected to the neck, it was included in the model line. (It also fulfilled requests for a true 'single-cut' body style). As a result of the extra mass, the Brase II has a bit more solidity and as does the Brase I, fits and balances on your body extremely well. Also, as stated before, careful examination of neck shape and mass combined with peghead and neck angles have allowed for superb extended range instruments with shorter scale lengths. The Brase II is offered standard in 34' scale with 35' offered as optional. Now available, 33' scale lengths with low 'B' strings that maintain their tambour and sonic integrity.

Body: two piece select Ash with figured Chechen, Cocobolo, Maple, or Walnut top
Neck: three piece Hard Rock Maple with dual action truss rod.
Fingerboard: Fretted: Grenadillo or Rosewood Fretless: Ebony, lined or unlined
Frets: 24 Pickups: KL custom Aero or Basslines passive soapbars in wood covers

bass

C Brase I

The Chamberbass features a sculpted, semi-acoustic bolt-on body with elegant sound holes, a wood/piezo bridge and an extended wooden tailpiece. This instrument was designed to emulate sounds of an upright acoustic bass combined with the silky, cello-like sounds of a very good electric fretless. The beauty of this instrument is the multi-level acoustic sound chambers topped with a matched soundboard, giving the bass a palate of sounds from 'Warm and Woody' to 'Punchy and Growly'. The extended anchor length to the wooden tailpiece gives the strings an added articulation, which results in a more percussive entry into the note. That, plus a more immediate connection to the body and a proper angle of the strings over the wood/piezo bridge.

Body: select sculpted Mahogany with multi-level acoustic chambers, select aged Redwood top, black Indian Ebony headcap, nut, and bridge/tailpiece
Neck: three piece Hard Rock Maple with dual action truss rod
Fingerboard: Ebony, lined or unlined
Pickups: single KL custom passive soapbar with wood cover, bridge mounted piezo
Preamp: custom Basslines preamp with master volume/ pull up mid contour, pan, boost/cut treble, mid, and bass controls; wiring and grounding is done using ultra-high grade Tara Labs wire and WBT silver solder
Finish: Body: gloss polyester finish,
Neck: oil finish
Hardware: Hipshot Ultralite tuning machines / wooden bridge and tailpiece
Scale: 34" standard, 35" upon request
Versions: 5, and 6-string, fretless, optional fretted

bass

C Brase II

The C-Brase II, the newest Chamber model, utilizes a standard bass bridge for reduced taught-ness to the strings for the plucking hand. It also allows for the use of standard length strings as opposed to the Chamberbass and the C-Brase I, which require a string with a winding length of 40.5".
The acoustic chambers give the instrument an open 'organic' quality that is reminiscent of vintage instruments where the wood has further dried and the resins have crystallized to make the body exceptionally resonant. The sculpted, thicker (2") body and the fact that the forward strap button is at or beyond the 9th fret, the comfort of this bass is truly a sensuous experience. As with all of the Brase models, careful sculpting of the attached section makes it virtually unnoticeable to the fretting hand and a 'glue-in' neck joint is employed, giving the heel a sculpted 'neck-thru' feel, but allows for the harmonically rich sound of a full body.

Body: two piece sculpted Alder, Ash, or Mahogany with multi-level acoustic chambers and figured Chechen, Cocobolo, Maple, or Walnut top
Neck: three piece Hard Rock Maple with dual action truss rod
Fingerboard: Ebony
Pickups: custom passive Aero or Basslines dual coil soapbar in matching or contrasting wood cover
Preamp: custom active preamp with master volume/pull up mid contour, pan, boost/cut treble, mid, and bass controls; wiring and grounding is done using ultra-high grade Tara Labs wire and WBT silver solder
Finish: handrubbed oil and wax on neck and body. Optional polyester high gloss finish in transparent red, blue, purple, or tobacco sunburst
Hardware: Hipshot Ultralite tuning machines, bridge
Scale: 34" standard, 33" and 35" upon request
Versions: 5, and 6-string, fretted or fretless

Tom Ribbecke

The Halfling Bass
The Halfling bass and guitar designs were completed in 2003 as a result of the joint visions of Tom Ribbecke, bassist and composer Bobby Vega, and guitarist/entrepreneur Paul Szmanda. The Halfling's patent pending concept is derived from Tom's initial proprietary guitar work melding flattop and archtop concepts in one instrument. The Halfling is a unique and proprietary design of bass. It uses the concepts of advanced lutherie design to create a more versatile and efficient stringed instrument by combining the flat bass side of a "Steel string" or "Classical" guitar top with the carved or arched treble side of the soundboard. This creates an instrument that is capable of large full fundamental bass response with the separation of course (ability to hear and distinguish all the notes of a complex chord when ringing together).

The traditional way of looking at the soundboard dictates the concept of either a flat thin top as in the Martin style steel string guitar, or the arched top for Jazz like the D'Angelico or Gibson instrument. We have combined the best of both worlds for the contemporary bassist whose literature now crosses over into both worlds. This is the logical conclusion of years of research and development beginning with the "Sound Bubble" guitars in the 80s and when Paul Szmanda gave Tom the opportunity to build something that he always wanted to do. The first Halfling was created.

Tom also had the opportunity to work with incredible bassist Bobby Vega for whom he could not just build an oversize guitar with four strings. Bobby is an artist who really required something special.....and he was patient enough for Tom to build the Bobby Vega model Halfling bass!

pic   BV-1 Bobby Vega Bass

The Bobby Vega Model has an X braced solid carved Western Red Cedar top, flatter on the bass side and more highly arched on the treble side, and is slightly heavier than the PB1. It has a solid maple carved back and a 34" scale maple neck with ebony fingerboard. The built in bridge pickup is specially made by Rick Turner.
The Vega model has a richer harmonic available and is slightly rounder and warmer in sound quality, and as its strings are physically longer (because of the tailpiece), the feel of the strings is a bit looser. The Vega has a bit more varied tonal palette appreciated by players looking for a more versatile bass.

PB-1 Pin Bridge Bass

The Halfing PB1 features a pin bridge and has a solid carved Western Red Cedar top, flatter on the bass side and more highly arched on the treble side. The X braced top is slightly lighter than the Vega model and features a bridge plate on the inside to allow the proper anchoring of the string ball ends.
The PB1's sound is slightly brighter and more punchy than the the Vega, more resistant to feedback, and features a bit more 'Steel string' edginess and note fundamental. It has the same 'dimensional voice-terous' quality, as Bobby puts it, but is tailored more for the bluegrass and any player looking for a more traditional string tension feel.

Body: carved Arched Top: 17" Lower Bout, Taper from Neck 3.75" to Tailblock 4.5"
Back: hand selected Western Bigleaf Maple
Sides: hand selected Western Bigleaf Maple
